Harry Belafonte is an American musician, actor, promoter, and activist. He has been one of the most prominent figures in the Caribbean folk song genre known as calypsos in the 1950’s. From then on, he became famous as the “The King of the Calypso.” Belafonte also participated in other social movements, including the campaign for civil rights. Born in Harlem to first-generation Jamaican immigrants, Belafonte returned to Jamaica with his mother due to severe poverty in the state and moved back when he was 13 years old.
